Beloved Cincinnati craft chocolatier Maverick Chocolate Co. is once again being awarded with national recognition.
On March 4, renowned chef Alice Waters will be handing out medals at the Good Food Awards in San Francisco, and Maverick will be receiving accolades for its Prohibition Milk Chocolate candy bar.
The bean-to-bar chocolatier describes the bar on its website as “made with real Kentucky Bourbon imparting the chocolate with a smooth bourbon flavor. A sprinkling of smoked sea salt balances out this lightly sweet, dark milk chocolate.”
Maverick is one of only three food purveyors in Ohio to be recognized by the Good Food Awards this year — the other two are Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn Mustards for the company’s Bohemian Blend and Columbus’ North Country Charcuterie for its Herbed Wagyu Bresaola.
Maverick posted about the win on its social media, saying it was the sixth time the company has received the honor. Its Fahrenheit 513, Tanzania 80% dark chocolate, Ruya Chocolate, 70% Belize and Big Island chocolate bars have all previously won a Good Food Award.
Each year, the Good Food Foundation hosts its own Good Food Awards to honor artisan and independent makers, merchants, farmers and more who are striving to create “tasty, authentic and responsible food,” as described by the foundation. This year, 244 companies from 39 states and Washington, D.C. were recognized out of more than 2,000 entries.
The Good Food Awards says, “For a long time, certifications for responsible practices and awards for superior taste have remained distinct — one honors social and environmental responsibility, while the other celebrates craftsmanship and flavor. The Good Food Awards recognizes that truly good food — the kind that brings people together and builds strong, healthy communities — contains all of these ingredients.”
Maverick Chocolate Co. is located at 129 W. Elder St., Findlay Market and 2651 Edmondson Road, Rookwood. Learn more at maverickchocolate.com.
