Pi Day happens every March 14 — aka 3/14 — and is so celebrated because the first three numbers of the mathematical constant Pi are 3.14. The number, which actually goes on for infinity (3.14159…..) defines the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

It’s a holiday for math nerds and people who love actual pies, a food in the shape of a circle.

This Pi Day, Fibonacci Brewing Company in Mt. Healthy — named for another mathematical concept, Fibonacci numbers —  is hosting its annual pie-eating contest at 6 p.m. March 14. (“Annual” is kind of a loose term here as the event has been canceled the past two years due to the pandemic.)

Contestants will meet in the beer garden and will include intrepid and hungry representatives from Urban Artifact, Humble Monk, Higher Gravity, Marty’s Hops N Vines and Brink Brewing Co.

The competition pits these brewery and bar reps against each other to see who will reign supreme as they devour cherry pies from North College Hill Bakery. The past two times, Brink’s founder and co-owner Mark Landers has won.

Local Queen City beer blogger and podcaster Andrew Desenberg from The Gnarly Gnome will emcee.

“This event idea came to me in a dream,” says Fibonacci Presidents and co-owner Betty Bollas in a release. “When I talked to our local partners, they were more than excited to participate and it was standing-room-only as spectators watched them compete for the annual trophy. We had to cancel the last two years due to COVID but are excited to be back and also able to host on the stage in our beer garden. The weather is supposed to be perfect.”

Fibonacci says Big Dogg’s Pizza truck will be on hand serving “pizza pie” to spectators.

Fibonacci Brewing Co. is located at 1445 Compton Road, Mt. Healthy. Learn more at fibbrew.com.
