The Root Beer Stand

Cincinnati’s favorite summertime staple has announced its opening date for the 2022 season. The Root Beer Stand in Sharonville will open on March 5.

Opened as an A&W Root Beer Stand in 1957, the now family-owned restaurant makes secret-recipe root beer (available by the jug) using water from the property’s well. With its particular minerality, the root beer is so incredibly unique and flavorful you won’t regret buying an extra gallon for the road.

But don’t miss out on the food — the secret-recipe chili for the eatery’s famous foot-long coney dogs is to die for. If you’re feeling super hungry, opt for the Timmy Dog: a foot-long hot dog topped with chili, cheese, onion, mustard, hot sauce, ketchup, relish, slaw and sauerkraut.

Caps decorate the ceiling of The Root Beer Stand.

The Root Beer Stand’s ceiling is decorated with baseball caps. The legend goes that it all started when a trucker left his trucking company hat on the counter after he ate. The staff displayed his hat by the door so he could retrieve it the next time he dined in, but a rival trucking company saw this as an act of advertising nepotism, demanding they be allowed to display their hat as well. Like a classic slippery slope, the hats began to pour in from all sorts of folks who just wanted to contribute to the fun.

The restaurant takes online orders — along with walk-in orders — and now accepts cash, credit and digital payment.
